For museums I'd say start at the MET. It's basically free and immense. I go there at least once a week to read, great environment. Take the 6 to 77th and walk there, you can run into many galleries on the way. Guggenheim is nearby, but that place is only worth the visit when there's an event going on. Avoid the Natural Museum of History, it's for children. I haven't been to Art and Design, but I heard the exhibitions are fantastic. MoMa midtown is on the expensive side, but definitely worth the visit. Take the 1/2 to 34 Penn station and walk to the Chelsea High Line which is on the west side around 10th Ave. The galleries are within large apartment building complexes and they're connected so you can visit them one after the other. These galleries are sort of unknown to tourists I suppose. You can usually pick up a booklet that highlights upcoming events and even more obscure gallery locations. Whitney Museum once you're done walking across the High Line. Lastly, go down Bowery and visit the New Museum. There's galleries around there too and I suggest walking across to the west from there. Hopefully while visiting one of these places you meet someone going to a private event. Don't be scared people are incredibly nice.

As for bars, it depends on your age. I'm 22 so my opinions are biased. Generally though, bars around central park are for rich people, bars around times square are for tourists, LES/Brooklyn is for young people. Bedford Ave in Brooklyn in a good place to start. Search up events at the Highline Ballroom and Music Hall of Williamsburg. Battery Harris is a bar I always love visiting, they have a nice lounging area/dance floor, demographic is late 20s. If you want something more crazy there's a club called Output that's relatively cheap with a good environment. As for the city, le poisson rouge is always fun. Tropical on the LES is a blast as well. Use these as starting points and just head to whatever seems more exciting. St Marks is ok too
