ann demeulemeester's brand of nostalgia is partially rooted in a sort of belgian permutation of new wave punk x goth. this was more obvious in the earlier (better) work, where the models looked like genderless dandies in bondage clothing too delicate to actually constrict them

ann demeulemeester has just been reworking and perfecting a particular facet of the belgian goth/punk aesthetic. that a separate strain evolved into mallgoth in america is hardly relevant to her work considering that she's been at this longer than most people on /fa/ have been alive, including myself.

i will say that her aesthetic holds a little less relevance for me now than it did before, and her technique is less compelling now than some more modern stuff i am paying attention to. i still love her old work.

i am absolutely certain that nomura or whoever it is doing those character designs is riffing on ann demeulemeester, because she was doing multiple belt and zipper detailing long before it appeared in final fantasy.

i also don't think the model represents an ideal fit tbh, needs some ease
