Nice. If you intend to wind them up, get them serviced by a trusted watchmaker; you wouldn't believe what wear and tear you can put on a movement if it's not lubricated properly or has parts that are in distress/need of repair. My Waltham says Hi.

Put it in your pocket and look at it when you need the time. It's no different than looking at your phone for the time.

If I were you, I'd spend the same money on an awesome pocket watch. You'll get more watch for your money, and if you wear 3 piece suits it'll be useful.

Vintage Rolexes are a premium in the resale market, so it's going to cost you a lot. There's no point when you could theoretically start saving when you get out of school and just get a new one. The technology will be better, it'll be 'your' Rolex, and you'll feel like you've earned it differently than if you bought someone else's watch.

Just a few thoughts.

Because plastic parts work. You're not paying for the materials, you're paying for how the materials have been worked AND for the brand. The brand represents usually around 70% of the markup on luxury goods, and watches are not immune to this. The precision and how these materials work together are what matters. The Zenith Defy Labs oscillator is silicon printed, it's not metal, and it costs an arm and a leg. Fucking awesome watch though in terms of engineering. The real question you should be asking is why we're paying 5k on a watch that in terms of engineering is 50 years old. That's not right. It should be in the realm of the Seagull reissue (i.e. less than 1000$).

Regarding the FWWOTM, that's just branding Anon. Buyers who are educated know that it's just branding, and they don't care. But allow for the possibility that the uneducated allow themselves to be fooled because the illusion is more enjoyable than the reality.

Why does the average person go into a watchstore and buy an expensive watch? It's certainly not to tell time accurately. It's to have a conversation piece, or something that increases their perceived status. If the illusion of a watch being tied to a great feat of human ingenuity, then why not let them have it? None of the watches we can purchase today have ever actually been to the moon....so it's more like, 'I'm wearing something that is the same 'kind' of watch worn on the moon'. It's a fantasy, because then the wearer feels like they can accomplish the same thing. Let them have it.
