this dress uses a lot of bias cut panels, and you'll notice that in spite of not being at all tight it's very body conscious, which is one of the properties of biased fabric. it also causes the skirt of the dress to hang in long drapes, and you'll notice that the seaming of the bodice is diagonal to match the grainlines.

if i can find it, i have a textbook that details how to drape this dress, altho i don't have a scanner so ill have to snap photos

the best and most seminal work always comes from people who have a great understanding of construction or who know who to wield their team. all of the great couturiers were extremely skilled and knowledgeable about design and construction and it didn't hurt their artistry, if anything it informed it. what you've presented is kind of similar to the fallacy proposed in music where learning too much theory will "harm" your creativity, when that really shouldn't be the case.

a friend termed stylist designers as gimp bitches (his words, not mine!) who really had to have their work edited or dictated to them by their pattern drafters. that's a little harsh, but i do think that an intimate knowledge of how fabric is turned into clothing should only liberate your creativity.

people don't really stop using themes and tropes, even when they begin to design, it's just that the themes becomes more abstract, and that in turn gives more space for their own creativity.

vionnet codified the technique of bias cutting, but it was just to further her riffs on classicism. womenswear designers have continue to riff on her bias work. the "theme" is vionnet's vocabulary, bias, etc.

that's not a real term, just a neologism i made up, you might also say he handle the fabric, cut the fabric, tailored the fabric better than i had envisioned. there's no easy way to explain it tho, you just gotta learn about fabric grain, and then go look at a bunch of clothes and see the different ways in which the fabric is hung and how they place seamlines on top of it.

for example, all the diagonal seaming on this dress is actually straight along the fabric grains, and the fabric itself is what has been placed at different angles.
