First of all his hair needs to be short enough on the sides for this to work or (a) it looks goofy or (b) you need a metric ton of product. Secondly you need enough hair up top. Thirdly, don't go with gel, shit sucks; use wax instead. "Prejume wax" is very easy to use; just run your finger in the container to get a dab and then rub your hands, and swipe in the desired directions. Might take a few tries; be careful, because if you fuck up too bad you will need more and more wax and eventually it's unsalvageable. The rest is artistic and "feeling around." Protip: unlike gel, wax doesn't work well with wet hair. You may use a comb if desired. You always want to go for as much "height" on the swoop as possible because it'll never be THAT high and if you try to make it lower it'll look flat and like Donald Trump's toupe. Fourthly, good luck. And finally, and I mean this in the most constructive way possible: your boyfriend should learn to style his own fucking hair unless you're forcing this do on him. It really comes in handy.
