European alternatives to the J.M.Weston 180 loafer? lots seem too pointy for my liking.

That's because Brits have godawful taste in clothes. They're all made in Scotland and generally available for sale by UK-based vendors. There was an exception where recently I went to a shop in Bologna (de paz) which sold a whole load of made-in-scotland brands that I'd never heard of and seem to have been produced solely for export. Shaggy Dogs sold at J.Press fall under this category.

They've become an ivy staple, especially the shaggy variant. Still, living in Paris, I have still managed to get hold of a few (all genuine shetland) so they're not exactly hard to get. In fact, there's a whole guide in the sticky to European sources of shetland jumpers. My favourites are bosie, jamiesons and howlin' by morrisons.

Is this the famous American education? Anyway, you're wrong about Paris. It's a big city with a lot of very nice places (16,17, 14, 7, 6, 11 arrondissements are all very civilised). I don't blame you though. Tourists always have bad experiences. Even native Frenchies hate Paris with a passion. I think you only really come to understand a place like Paris when you actually live there for a time. Better than London btw. I hate London and I've lived here for many years.
