You can drink it is DXM is the only active ingredient. The other most common ingredient that some cough syrups have will make you puke your guts out in large amounts.
And I'm sorry, should have explained that better. Look up DXM plateaus for more info, but basically you'll only trip at 4th plateau, and you need to take a shit load for that.
In smaller amounts it can be kind of relaxing, if you have a distraction like tv or video games.
Wouldn't recommend it in small amounts if you plan to just sit there and focus on the high, you may have a bit of an anxiety attack
