The problem with this, is that it's painfully obvious it's just an outfit for this city kid.

Aside from the beard, there's nothing all that masculine about him. Masculinity isn't just a beard (though it certainly helps), it's a set of hardened eyes, low brows, and other strong facial features. This guy lacks all of them. He just looks like a bitch with a beard.
