I'm getting to that.

The essentials are this:

The 1980's was a time of flash trends, gaudy over the top design, and prominent branding as epitomized by the flamboyant pop culture referencing designs of Jean Paul Gaultier.

Lang's target beginning in the late '80's was to strip away the flash and brand to create a cooler than thou look defined by precise tailoring, conspicuous lack of branding (whoa, who the fuck makes that jacket), and coy erotic details.

Lang used carefully placed slits, holes, and cutouts in his clothing to provide tantalizing glimpses of skin. He championed the idea that sexy need not be overt. Sophisticated clubwear reimagined in delicate sheer fabrics like the mohair sweater at left typify the charged atmosphere he created despite the minimalistic designs.

The influence of his minimalist no branding look is seen everywhere in fashion these days. He steered the big houses away from the overt advertising they were falling into in the '80's.

Rick Owens has built a large following based on his sheer dresses and cutout pieces exposing unusual bits of underlayers and skin, something Lang was doing ten or fifteen years earlier.

one of my favorite pieces

Helmut Lang elongated mohair sweater with slashed sleeves
A/W 1993

The deconstructed style later came to define Lang's work and slashed sleeves were a common feature of his womenswear. This is one of the earlier examples I've seen.

It's a perfect blend of luxury and sexy street that Helmut was so good at. His designs ooze sex appeal while remaining modest.

This piece hints at nudity with the see through material and elbow cutouts, but the cut of the garment is modest. It's versatile depending on how you style it. If you're bold you can wear it with nothing under it at which point you're not hiding much or you can style it with a tank or another shirt.

It's made from mohair, which is traditionally a luxury material. He's turned that luxury on end as a hip clubber type garment.

It's minimalistic shape and subtle details like the cross darts and cutouts foreshadow his later work.

I could have picked from any number of his collections though. His style evolved so much over his 17 year career. Hell, he even changed the rules of designer fashion and runway shows.
>no catwalk
>models on same level as audience
>serpentine runway
>decides to show his collection before everyone else, ultimately resulting in NY fashion week taking place first
