>A polyester or nylon shirt could certainly last a few months of nonstop wear before falling apart

I think a rotation of maybe three or four shirts a crewmember washed infrequently would last quite a long time. Anyone here know how submariners' uniform issue goes?

>cotton

I'm pretty sure they'd be growing hemp, more durable and if all the propaganda is to be believed less resource-intensive to grow.

One layering possibility that'd jive with a lot of the inspiration people bring: natural fabric undershirt to protect from sweat a nylon shirt-jac.

>paper clothing

Why not just some kind of rayon?

>The rubber will wear off and get into the ventilation systems.

I don't think so. Or at least I hope not; leather soles suck. If that was a problem, you'd hit on it with any fiber fraying, and a quick GIS brings up pic related.
