you dont have to explain anything if you bash someone with a maglite since they cant really prove you've taken it with you to use as a weapon like they could easily do with a bat.
since my job is an electrician i use a torch quite often so i naturally have it on me a lot so its just way more convenient and i've never had anybody say anything about me carrying it in my bag since it doesnt register as a potential weapon in peoples eyes.
