It's something that's not easy to gauge until you have both fabrics in your hand, but a lot of tech jackets are made with synthetics in their shell. Sometimes when the bag is tubbing against the synthetic fabric, little fibers can break and get balled up, leaving that unsightly layer of fuzz around your shoulders and butt, where the bag is hitting.
Sometimes you can get a fabric shaver (evercare, 19.99) and restore the look by shaving off those little balls. Sometimes even this process would damage the garment further. With something like a nice new Musto Sailing smock? well, until I had it in my hands I couldn't be 100%, but chances are it's heavy enough to face up to cordura or milspec tarp.
Still though, I would be wearing a brushed twill bag with that jacket. Something softer.
Other garments, like this Rapha Raeburn jacket, will simply lose some of their detailing, like those silver spots on the arms. The website actually warns about this.
I started really thinking about this after I ruined some great shirts.
