In my opinion, it's because the shape of that date window maintains the perception of many rings within rings the watch dial. Since you can see the curve of the ring and the window which presents it, it adds one more ring to the many on the dial instead of being just a little tilted square plopped down at 8 o'clock. Shitty pic related, but I think it gets my point across.
