They probably have high impedance, meaning voice coil resistance, which requires you to use an intermediary amplifier for optimal sound. My friend has a pair like that, they sound great through his macbook which feeds into the amp and then the headphones, but through his Pono player, the volume is noticeably lacking, and I doubt there are any internal settings which could boost the output the way his amp does.

The Pono is pretty sweet, he got it at the Kickstarter price of $300 in black, they're $400 retail now. I really think they should've come with 128gb standard though, right now it's 64gb + 64gb micro sd expandable [probably be patched to 128gb eventually], but the high sampling rate albums are multiple GB's each, it's already filled and it takes forever to load music with a USB 2.0 he has on his older macbook pro.
