there are three ways, and three ways only, to wear heraldic elements and not be a complete faggot:

>inherit arms
this is probably not you. if you have to be taught heraldry 4 babies, you probably haven't inherited arms. there is a remote chance you can assume an ancestor's arms, if you do your research and go back into your line and find a patrilineal ancestor.

>be scottish and have a special name
if you are like me and have a scottish surname and descent, you may be entitled to wear a clan badge. historically this meant you were a supporter and/or relative of the clan chief, and you wore his crest (the bit above the helm, as mentioned) to show that support. picrel for me.

>assume arms
this is the most chad and patrician way to wear arms. if you are american, you can literally just design your own arms and 'assume' them. you don't need anything official, but there are some genealogical societies who will register your arms in their journal. in some choice places in europe, there are laws surrounding this: in scotland for example you must be granted arms by the lord lyon, king of arms. if you have even a single scottish ancestor, i believe he will grant you differenced arms.

if you aren't a bonafide, old world aristocrat you have two choices: larp or autism. clearly i have chosen the autism, which is the patrician and chad answer.
