Yeah I know, the article is old. Surprisingly the chinese tourbillons haven't affected the Swiss market the way I would have expected. I'm not sure if it's because no one really knows about them in the west, or if they're unwilling to drop a grand on chinese watch tech. There's no prestige in it, probably.

You know what's even more amazing? That there are brands that make watches better than Rolex. Amazing, isn't it? The unfortunate situation with Tudor is that they share enough basic components to encourage direct comparison, and that's why Tudor is a poor-man's Rolex. You can't do the same thing comparing Oris with Rolex, or Omega with Rolex, or any other company like that.

Perception is everything in the luxury watch world because that's what causes people to buy these things in the first place, and to emotionally choose one over the other.

Older Tudors not so much, but newer ones are absolutely more adventurous in their aesthetic choices than standard Rolexes. Rolex however must take themselves 'seriously' because their brand is like gold; it's supposed to stay valuable over decades, and that means that if they choose aesthetics that change with the wind, the desirability goes down.
