Perception is everything and people are naturally very good at detecting who is a member of their tribe due to hundreds of thousands of years of evolution. To use an example, you could very easily tell whether someone was an Australian Aborigine or a high IQ North African, even if they wore the same clothes, ate the same food and spoke the same languages (which you have no way of forcing groups to do).

Visual perception is key (following behaviour), scents and hormones come second, brain chemistry and language structure come third.
