This isn't a Cal 321 though; see the bridge that holds the center seconds is not u-shaped (in your pic it's on the lower right corner). That plastic bit is the chronograph seconds brake that I talked about before in >>14844572

There's definitely some cross-posting here. The 1861 (which you find on the sapphire sandwich) is just the decorated 861, and as a functional watch it's not terribly worse than the modern valjoux 7750 (which everyone from IWC to Fortis uses, and Omega used before the coaxial conversion of the late 90's). The 7750 can do more things though; it can be automatic wind, and it has options for COSC as well as date and other complications.

The 861 is chronograph only really...anything that is added has to be added on top, thickening the movement substantially.

Considering that standard valjouxs will be in the range of 3-5k anyway, the argument is somewhat perplexing, especially because any watch that you pay for that is more than 100$ (mechanical, mind you) is a loss.

Oh....sorry about that. Here, have another pic of my recent cop which no one is asking about but I'm happy with.

Unfortunately, there's little option for the modern consumer, but that being said, Cal 861s were flight certified, so although they haven't been to the moon, it's definitely been in space. It's as close as the average pleb gets without doing research and going vintage, which is full of huge danger spots considering Cal. 321s in decent condition start around 8-10gs.

Agreed. I have one too and it's still running excellently. The 7750 is overpriced but it's hardy, it's not a waste of money and it can be serviced by anyone. The Lemania 5100s are a nightmare to service, but if serviced well will last a lifetime. It also depends on the watch it's in. You can get a good 5100 in a Fortis for 2200...but if you're looking for the grail it'll be in the 25,000 range.
