The whole point is that you can blow five figures on something stupid. Nobody who has a Rolex doesn't know that a $12 Casio actually keeps better time. It's a status symbol, as in "I am better than you". That one moment of recognition is not one moment. You see that stupidly expensive item once and then you remember forever that that person is better than you. And I say better than you because your brain has a very rough, primordial way of keeping track of your status compared to others. That pathway is mediated by serotonin, and it's why we get SSRI's as antidepressants. Your status is maybe the #1 indicator of your overall happiness, and it's why the ultra-wealthy are absolutely addicted to dickwaving with eachother with expensive shit.
