I'm going to assume your mentioning of "simple" and "plain" means that you have an inclination towards minimalism, but your apparent desire for "ruggedness" and function would mean that extreme minimalism (i.e. form over function) would be against your values.

I'm also going to assume that you want some natural, earthly connotations within your style. You will want to look into colour palettes derived from nature, but not too bohemian: flowers do not seem to suit you, and even camouflage patterns might be too natural to work. Instead of raw natural colours, mix natural colours with primitive and artificial colours: iron, coal, rust, stone bricks, and braised beef.
