pocket watches will make a comeback as formal watches in the next few years: smart phones made the concept of "pocket tools" popular again, the preference for bigger sized and more extravagant looking watches shows that people want their watches to be noticed (and with pocket watches they can achieve that without looking "low class"), the quality of even upper-mid range pieces costing a few hundred dollars is superior to anything found today outside the sub-10k non-haute horlogerie segment (decorated in-house movements with screw-on gold chatons, blued screws, swan neck regulators, enamel dials, hand decorated precious metal cases), they are rare and exclusive assets compared to modern mass produced wrist watches, and they are the last segment where dealers and the affiliated watch press can still make huge profits after the vintage craze (and the same narrative that bred a new generation of collectors can be easily transferred to pocket watches)
