I hear this complaint a lot, and the same question always pops into my head. "Why is that?"
Why is it that the underclass have zero ambition? Why is it that providing welfare is a bad idea? Why is it bad to focus on an egalitarian ideal?
Having grown up on welfare, attended university through need-based scholarships, and begun work with 90K salary because of this assistance, clearly I am a little biased on issues like this. I'm sure that my future political decisions will be abused by many. But I'd rather there be a welfare system for people who've grown up in circumstances like me than rely on the "pick yourself up by the bootstraps" ideal.
