I found the story of Laika to be quite touching. She became the first animal that we sent to space, but paid the ultimate price for it. Apparently one of the Soviet scientists who worked behind the scenes on the mission admitted that he didn't believe they learned enough from her voyage for her death to have been worthwhile, so I figured she deserved to be commemmorated at least for her sacrifice.

Also I think the whole Russian criminal tattoo aesthetic is pretty cool.
