These are just ironic sayings, or used as an insult by the lower class.

No. I don't dress preppy, I am Preppy. I am a refined Man/Woman, I have taste in good quality clothes and have a higher pursuit of intellectual things.

Preps are seen as the defacto "normie" (or symbol of the upper class), I just watched this movie "Ready Player One", and as an example, this screenshot, is of the characters who are hired by the big corporation as new graduates from good schools to solve this large problem in the movie. Look at how their characters are dressed.

Then if you watch the movie, the opposite to this is the "rebel", characters (the proles), they are dressed in army field surplus jackets, and boots, like Punk.
