I agree that art, and design, isn't necessarily about the creator's desire to translate a concept or an emotion or anything else, it might just be to create something pleasing. I mean, some of my personal favorite designers, namely Daiki Suzuki, Hiroki Nakamura and Yosuke Aizawa, are creating clothing for clothing's sake, and almost all the references they draw are contemporary clothing (from the last 100~150 years or so).
But for a fair amount of designers, designers like Rick, have a far wider range of influences and concepts behind there work - I find everything you can learn helps foster a greater understanding of Rick's work, from his architectural, artistic and historical influences, to his personal philosophy of clothing, and practically everything else.
I know you can enjoy clothing taken independently as clothing, but considering there is more to making clothes than simply cutting patterns and sewing fabrics, I think it's in anyone's own best interest to learn more about what they're consuming and taking somewhat of a critical approach to these things, and yes, I think a greater understanding fosters a greater level of enjoyment. You have all these resources to learn about designers and their work and their influences, everything from books to magazines to the internet, why purposely limit yourself and be actively ignorant when you have the chance to learn more at your fingertips?

This is a fashion board, what makes me think we give two fuck about coffee? Drink whatever you want. How is a drink fashionable?
