One of the Sprouse clones wearing an oath bracelet.

In the pre-christian era these signified you had sworn an oath on the gods. This could be for anything like quitting alcoholism as mentioned in sagas or more commonly to serve a jarl.

When one was given by a jarl, the more elaborate and expensive the bracelet, the more powerful the jarl and thus the more afraid you'd be to challenge his subject. Breaking an oath was extremely shameful and it was generally believed the gods would reject your entry to valhalla if you did. But then again Loki rewarded trickery, and to many the gods must have been more like metaphors anyway so breaking an oath would have been more like fucking over yourself. Today, oath bracelets might serve an esoteric and meditative purpose in reminding yourself something you promised yourself and the 'gods' (your mind).
