First you need to understand what socialism is since you appear to be struggling with this one, despite what many would have you think socialism is a stage in Marxist theory and was fleshed out and essentially coined by Marx and Engels it is the transitory phase between capitalism and Communism with Communism being the state of post scarcity that we Communists aim towards. As a Communist building Socialism is our primary goal in order to advance the dialectic and proletarian movement. You are confusing the term Socialist with Social Democrat that is essentially a capitalist liberal with token elections.
Here is a list of socialist principles from 1949 that all subsequent Socialist states and People's Republics are defined by.

● the dictatorship of the proletariat the workers’ and peasants’ State,
● Socialised property of the main instruments and means of production.
Expropriation of all the large factories and their management by the state.
● Nationalisation of all capitalist banks, the merging of all of them into a single state
bank and strict regulation of its functioning by the state.
● The scientific and planned conduct of the national economy from a single centre,
● From each according to his capacity, to each according to his work, distribution of
the material good depending upon the quality and quantity of the work of each
person.
● Obligatory domination of Marxist-Leninist ideology, armed forces that allow the
defence of the revolution. Ruthless armed suppression of counter revolutionaries.
