To me, "this is an ironic fit" means "I like these clothes, but I know that they are controversial/unfashionable and in case you were to criticize them I've got a defense against it by saying that I'm wearing it as a joke, in full awareness of how corny the fit is".

Pretty much like when you're distancing yourself from criticism against your person by always joking about things, specifically yourself. It's easier to cope with that you suck when you're not taking yourself seriously, and especially when the opinions of others are based of a not-serious version of you. Not taking anything seriously is therefore mostly just looked down upon/pitied by me as it is interpreted as a clear sign of personal insecurity.
