They can cause traction alopecia, same as hairbands or anything that may cause pulling on your hair. A tight hat worn for too long can also slightly restrict bloodflow to the scalp. Also sweating and wearing a hat keeps your scalp wet for longer, which is apparently bad for hair growth. Not a good idea to wear a tight hat every day, but wearing a fitting hat sometimes is not an issue.
IMO protecting your hair from the sun is way more important, sun damages hair very quickly.
