teach yourself to sew by hand, at least make a pillow by hand, then get a machine. make another pillow case. then make an apron, some other shit, like then a button up, keep working on the button up until its good (do other stuff if you get stuck) then start making pants. work from patterns. eventually you'll be good enough to sew without the instructions that come with the pattern (they're terrible). try tailoring pant legs early on too.

study a lot along the way and probably take some classes. its a skill that has been handed down orally until recently so a lot of info is gonna be out of your reach. once you can make things well, start making patterns (definitely find a class for this so you can skip months of mistakes).

it's really hard. use any tools you can (don't get fixed on hand sewing or teaching yourself). take classes whenever you can from whoever.
