A woody-spicy scent built on a fougere skeleton. Lavender there is to die for though. Classy, confident and manly. However, NYI is like an upgraded version of it and I don't see a place for both of them in my roto so own rather a bottle of Nicolai not BdP.

>breh, i came here to ask about how much better third man and NYI is compared to Bois Du Portugal cause I just tried it today and this isn't something I could pull off at 23. It's nice but the old man quality is too strong, I think a 30 year old could just pull it off but I can't. Third Man has been something I want to blind buy but I dunno. Is it easier to wear then Bois Du Portugal for someone younger? I know BdP is the weakest with this dna and I can see myself enjoying something with this dna but of a higher quality. It exudes class.
I would say that in terms of how dated they are NYI is the least then BdP (which is frankly rather mature not dated) and then Caron (which is a bit dated but not horribly). All of them are 25+ though in my opinion.

>How do I start wearing "classier" fragrances for dinner parties and other things I'd wear a suit for without going down the Gentleman's Gazette road of weaponised autism?
I'm not sure what you really mean here. You don't want to LARP? In this case just sample first and see if you like a fragrance. Don't buy into any narratives how something is a 'classy musthave gentleman scent from 80s'. Otherwise you might find couple of wears down the road that you actually hate the scent and find it dated.
>Is Bois du Portugal a good option to start with?
Yes, that's some option but I'd rather suggest Nicolai NYI. On paper these are similar scents but NYI is better in any possible dimension including price. Other possibilities from a similar subgenre: Lalique Homme Lion - that's a cheap alternative to BdP or Caron Le 3' Homme - that's also a cheap one but way more heavy on spices and I personally don't like it a lot but some people love it.

Just got my sample of Bois du Portugal and decant of Cuir Cuba Intense. BdP belongs to the same genre as New York Intense. Just as NYI it opens with bergamot served on some woody background but lavender is definitely the dominant note. The opening is snice and classy and I can imagine someone wearing it as his black tie events fragrance of choice. Despite some NYI similarities it rather reminds me A LOT of Le 3' Homme de Caron. It's like Caron but without the annoying 'couch cushions in an indian nursing house' element to it which is nice but not sure if the increase in price from $30 for a bottle of Caron to $300 a bottle of this Creed makes a good case for buying it. This is the third Creed that I liked other than GIT and SMW (that is completely pointless to buy given that Mefisto Gentiluomo exists) but I wouldn't buy it as I don't really buy frags that I just 'like' anymore. Especially given that I sprayed my NYI on my second wrist and holy shit I've forgotten how good this fragrance is. The fresh, zesty bergamot and black pepper opening of NYI mogs BdP completely. It's so much brighter (but deeper at the same time), voluminous and sparking with energy that BdP looks really pale and flat in the direct comparison. Funnily enough now that it started settling it seems like it just accepted that it can't compete and its dry down conjures up one of these soapy citrus colognes from 90s (I'm sure that Boucheron Pour Homme is 90% similar - I'll test that later). Some can say 'classy' I'd say that BdP just feels dated. There's still only king - New York Intense.
