My theory is that band shirts would be better without text almost 100% of the time
When a band shirt doesn't say the band's name on it, it becomes just a neat shirt to unaware people and you get nods from fans. When there is the text, it becomes "HEY EVERYONE I LISTEN TO PINK FLOYD/SWANS/JOY DIVISION/WHATEVER

Although without text the band doesn't get their name out there, which is the point.
