There was a really amazing father son clothing label out of London called De Rien. The father ran a stall selling vintage fabrics at two of London's most famous markets, Portobello and Spitalfields. The son began creating clothing out of the fabrics with a nod to period styles. I haven't seen anything new from them for years and it wouldn't surprise me if they'd closed up shop. That's one route you could take though is to source vintage fabrics for your own projects to add more character.

Pic related is a grail of mine and I kick myself every now and again for not buying it when I had the chance. The silk is treated using an ancient Chinese technique of dying it with yams and then burying it in iron rich river mud.

I'm still kicking myself for not buying this jacket back in the day. The mudsilk fabric is so gorgeous and the dying process is fascinating.

De Rien is one of my favorite smaller labels. It's run by a father and son who got their start buying and selling old fabric at flea markets. They take vintage fabrics and pieces and breath new life into them through careful tailoring, repairing, and restructuring. I only have a pair of cropped pants/shorts from them but they have so much character.

De Rien is another label that I've been into recently. It's run by a father and son. The father owned a used fabric shop in a London market and they specialize in creating bespoke garments out of old fabrics and vintage pieces.

This piece was dyed using the centuries old Chinese mud silk method whereby the fabric is covered in iron rich mud and washed in the nearby river. The mud lends not only a beautiful mottled look but a luxurious butteriness.

De Rien oxblood mud silk jacket
S/S 2013

This one is gorgeous, rare, and expensive, but with good reason. Mud silk is a thousands of years old Chinese technique in which the silk is actually rubbed with or buried under iron rich mud. The fabric is smooth and silky and the naturally achieved patterning is ridiculously cool. True handmade luxury.

The dark burgundy with almost black lapels along with the extended length give it an old fashioned feel like an edwardian smoking jacket. The slim sleeves, single button, and weathered pattern update the piece with an edgy modern look.
