I think either of these approaches misses the best part about Neofolk which is precisely the interplay between the two.

That's why I like The Kibbo Kift so much. Even though they predate the contemporary Neofolk movement, the aeshteics of these back-to-earth post WWI campers seems to me to undeniably similar in their melding of modern / ancient.
