the defining characteristic that makes them chukka/desert boot is that the upper is all one piece of material that is folded over. thats why they are chukka/desert, it has nothing to do with goodyear welting.

chukkas? they are casual boots. it's like wearing hiking boots. most "dress" boots,are really just flashy hiking boots or military boots. boots have a purpose, to protect your ankle, and keep in warmth. to allow for good cushioning over rough terrain.

pic related, you can see the chukka boot is just once big piece of leather, but wrapped around itself, to cover the ankle completely, you have to look at the boot for what it is.
