The closest I've got is one with a classic American brand name but it wasn't actually made here.

"Homage" is a pretty nebulous term that could really use more gradiation. In music terms, you've got horological equivalents of Elvis impersonators (fakes), cover bands (carbon copies in all but name like the Tissell), tribute bands (stuff like the SKX that takes all of its main features from the Sub but isn't an exact clone) and then ones that are obviously influenced by the icons but don't pretend to be them, like my Ball here, which has a bunch of Explorer in it but would never be mistaken for a clone. They all get wrapped up into "homage" except for maybe the last category, which is funny to me because I think it's the one that I think the term suits best, and it's the one I'd rather see more of than the closer copies.

Explorer is more of a field watch than a diver imo but I really like any sort of sports watch with a white dial, it's a lot of what drew me to my Ball.

I came really close to buying one last time I was in Japan. They were cheap when I was there too, plenty of nice ones under 2k. I ended up getting my Ball Engineer instead - the price was really good, I really liked the watch (and still do), I felt more comfortable buying a brand new watch, and wasn't sure I'd be happy with a Speedy that wasn't a Professional - but in hindsight sometimes I wish I'd bought the Omega instead just to have a watch from a well-known company that I wouldn't have to explain and justify to people.

I think you're the first other Ball owner I've seen on 4chan. That's the one with the in-house movement, right?

I've never been able to find confirmation of that China shit. They have a Swiss movement, they're assembled in Switzerland, and the build and finish quality are at least as good as any comparable Swiss watch, so what does it matter if the cases or whatever really are made in China? I've looked at mine under a microscope before and it's at least as good as the macro pics I've seen of Omegas and stuff that cost 3-5x what my Ball did.

This Ball. It just doesn't look right without the mirror polish on the center links, the look and quality of the polish was one of the main things that drew me to the watch in the first place and it's nowhere near as nice without it. It's not big obvious scratches that are the issue either, more about the general fine scratching that comes from wearing it under flannel shirt and jacket cuffs and has made the polished parts look almost brushed.

I came really close to buying one of those when I was in Japan a couple of years ago. Ended up getting my Ball instead, it was similar money to the cheapest used Auto/Reduced Speedys and I really liked it after seeing in person.

Just put the bracelet back on my Ball for the first time in ages.
