>what school you go to?

for sewing and patternmaking i went to la trade tech, they have killer instructors for that.

>do you think almost any community college would be worth taking some night classes at/is this stuff pretty standard?

no, very few schools offer decent industrial sewing classes, and teach you how to use and create patterns. its extremely specialized and not many schools in the US at least offer it.

>or would instruction vary a lot?

yes it would.

i first started taking home sewing classes from an old lady when i was 16 and had no idea how to start. then i worked doing cutting and sewing for an industrial design company that made products out of fabric, then i took industrial sewing classes, and lots of pattern making classes which require you to sew the patterns you make, and i also make clothes for myself and to sell. I also do projects freelance, which tend to be costume type of projects. i also worked at a leathergoods factory and sewed preliminary samples.

lots of places i guess thats just the sewing exp. ive had off the top of my head

no worries, but yeah people ask constantly, and before you ask, no you cant learn from books, at least not well.

no i sell the clothes, not the patterns, you can buy one and knock it off if you want though :)

its not hard for me because i sew and make patterns often, if you dont its probably harder, but if you are interested, i recommend trying it regardless

cleaned up almost everything at this point, but i used to have my walls covered in completed patterns, with notes on them that i wanted to remember, one wall was entirely patterns for different types of sleeves, with their revisions. another wall was different cuts of trousers

>Hey user, i believe you said something about working as an industrial sewer or something when you got out of high school?

yeah i did, but also was a cutter half the time, by hand and managed a cutting table.

>could you possibly tell me about that, and what it was like and what you learned?

repetitive, long hours, really boring in certain aspects, just listening to the radio and slicing out shapes of fabric.

industrial sewing is also super repetitive, you cut huge stacks of all the pieces of things youre going to sew, and there is a specific order everything is done in, so you do one step over and over until all the pieces have that step finished then you move on to the next one.

Also spent a great deal of time installing hardware, snaps, zippers, twist fasteners, etc. was grunt work basically because i wasnt really experienced in anything.

maybe tell me specifically what you want to know?

>how would someone go about trying to find a job like that?

i dont know, i got the job because my relatives are designers and run the business.
