Hi /diy/ as one of my long-term projects I am making a violin, pic related it is my progress so far. I'm a fairly competent carpenter but carving is new to me. The scroll was fairly straigtofrward, but carving the top (spruce tonewood) and back (maple) has me stumped. I used a small flat chisel (right in photo) to remove the initial waste and that make fine shavings as I would expect, but when I come to using the curved gouges to get the shape they just skate over the surface and I can't make a cut. Now it could be my technique, or the sharpening (for regular carpentry chisels and plane irons I have a two grade oil stone and three grades of diamond whetstone).

Any carvers or luthiers able to share some tips?

Honestly a good Furniture dolly can work wonders. They are a good deal more expensive than regular hand carts but with the addition of the higher wheels and rubberized sliders on the back they will significantly reduce the wear on your tailgate.

Generally, they will charge for their services as soon as they take delivery of the package. Frequently, if I have a package shipped through FedEx they will scan it a maximum of two times. I had one come from London, England to Texas that only got scanned in Louisville, Ky and Dallas, Tx. They are not very diligent about scanning them into the system.

1- Local lumber yards generally have a larger selection of better grade woods than big box stores.
2- You can use L-brackets like >>578875
said, or use a s4s 1x2 screwed or nailed into the studs behind the "desk" on both walls
3- I would recommend staining because the stain is not going to chip off, but if you are dead set on painting, I would use an outdoor primer and an outdoor paint because they generally hold up better under wear

Zoning laws only refer to the type of structure and use of said structure that is allowable on said land. Every State, County, and Municipality makes slight modifications to the International Builders Code (or Residential Code) depending on how the land is zoned that any structure above a minimum size (Tom Green county, Texas is 200 ft2) must adhere to. Also, if you plan on having any unsupported spans over 20 ft or a second story you are going to need an engineer/architect to look at and seal the plans or your structure will be demolished.

If you aren't going for a clear epoxy I would recommend using inlace. When we use it, which is admittedly very seldom, it holds up extremely well.

>The process/rough price of buying the land to build upon and what permits are required

This is going to depend greatly on several factors, including but not limited to what state, county, and municipality you live in. Each will have their own rules and regulations for permits though the IRC (International Residential Code) is a good guide to go off of. Price of land is also going to vary dramatically based on where you are setting up. Check the real estate listings for your prospective area.

The other 3 vary greatly due to the fact that we have very little detail about the house. a 3/4 profile shot of the house does not provide sufficient detail. We would need to know the prospective size, if the dormer windows are decorative or not, if the house is situated on a hill, the number of bathrooms and regular rooms and the prospective sizes of each.

Another issue not brought up, other than slightly by >>567143
is building code issues. If you live in the U.S., you will absolutely have to have an architect involved with a second story, or an unsupported span over 20 ft. Otherwise, the city/county/state can force you to remove any and all "un-approved improvements" made to the house.
