Just popping in to say that it looks like you did a fantastic job on laying paint. I don't see any low spots or orange peel in your wet sanded area! I'm sincerely impressed.

I use a hybrid HF transceiver from the 1970s.

It has a solid state receiver with a tube based amplifier section for transmission...best of both worlds.

It produces 100 watts of output.

My furthest contact using an antenna made out of lamp wire is 9302 miles to KC4USV - the station for McMurdo Station, Antarctica.

It can be fun at times, dull at others.

Hmm?

VHF handhelds typically are no bigger than a standard motorola talkabout. They offer 5 watts power, external changeable antennas, and superior range.

There are also "expedition" HF/VHF/UHF rigs out there.

Neat.

Cobra 29 LTD Classics are a favorite of mine. They are a solid AM 40ch workhorse.

A 2SC2999 and Schottky diodes can be installed in the receiver section to boost sensitivity and filtering.

A dipole is simple to make.

Get some two-wire lamp cord and cut it to 110". Then split it, giving you two 110" pieces. One is signal, one is ground. Trim them equally until your SWR is around 1.5.

You need to build a balun at the feedpoint of the dipole, since you are going from unbalanced 50 ohm coax to a balanced dipole.

The antenna should be hung horizontally, but an upside down "V" is okay too.

You should hook me up with some 1/2" Heliax with type-N connectors. I'm in Michigan.

Not gonna lie, I'm almost exclusively a Yaesu / Vertex guy.

Extreme low band stuff is my favorite. I'm really excited that the United States may be opening up 600meter band to amateurs (~500 khz)!

Microwave is really interesting to me, but the circuit design is really unforgiving, and commercial equipment isn't really cheaply available as surplus yet. I would love to see more experimentation on 5 ghz+.

Primaries:
Yaesu FT101EE - HF
Yaesu FT2600m - VHF-FM
Vertex FTL-7011 - UHF-FM

Handhelds:
Yaesu FT270r
Baofeng UV8r
Puxing PX888 (I have a couple programmed for FRS/GMRS...lol)

What kind of comms?

HF, VHF, UHF, or microwave?

Or hardline stuff?

Heptane is safe for electronics and sublimates without leaving a residue.

Do it in a well ventilated area. It is derived from benzene and causes cancer.

At EMP is nothing more than a high microvolt surge at low amperes.

ICs and transistors are most susceptible since they operate at low voltages.

Pure analog electronics, or vacuum tube based electronics are unaffected.

Try running JUST the starter with a 12 volt battery. If you connect the whole vehicle, you'll grenade your bulbs.

If it is a manual transmission, one option is to air the tires up and bump start it.

It works, just make sure you put the correct polarity for the anode and the cathode.

It also takes a lot of amperes.

A mixture of propane/butane is actually a better refrigerant than Freon.

It is what I am using in my Isuzu Trooper, since R134 works like crap in R12 systems. R12A (propane/butane) was cheap, easy to work with, and compatible with R12's ester or mineral oil.

It's a gateway drug into amateur radio.
