Hi there /diy/er's, I have a question that I hope some people can give me somewhat of a solid answer to. I am going to be moving out of my parents house soon to another city for college and I will be in need of making some decent money to support myself. I already have a regular job secured, but I was wondering if I could somehow make some sort of decent extra cash on the side by building furniture, specifically beds.

I have been wondering about a way to make money when I moved out and I saw this today on instructables and it gave me the idea that maybe I could make some good quality furniture and sell it for maybe 2-3 times the price locally so I can make some good side money.

here is the link:
http://www.instructables.com/id/Bed-Frame/

I have all the necessary tools (except for 1-2) for making this bed and I could even design my own different type of bed and sell them because I have actually built a lot of things like this before. I was wondering if anyone knew if this was possible, would people buy a nicely built bed for like 300-400 like the one in the picture? Do you think people would also be into buying non-brand name custom made furnitre?

I have a bit of a thing for modern design architecture and furniture, and I could easily design and more than likely build ultra modern looking styled beds. Would people be interested in buying this stuff from me? I would probably only make like 1-2 beds a month considering I would be a full time student but I wanted to ask if this was even possibility...

oi, what's up man? I'll post some pictures of the battle station I set up like 2 months ago, it's pretty sweet and didn't cost me very much. I don't know what exactly you're looking for but this is what I have right here.

the lighting it much better in here than it looks, I am using my phone to take the pictures and it isn't doing a great job of capturing the light, also I did read up on the whole ergonomic computer usage before I bought the stands, it was one of the many reasons I went with buying them instead of making ones myself

This was one of the things I really liked about having the ergotron LX desk mounts. I can move the monitors almost effortlessly anywhere I wasnt in almost any direction, they will spin 360 degrees so that I can switch my monitor from landscape to portrait and back within seconds, and I can move them wherever I want, back, forth, up down, left and right, and when I am not using the computer they will push up and flat against the wall so I can use the whole desk for whatever I want and I have full access to the back of my desk too. Also, I can bring the monitors down to desk level so that if I am using them to study, like in the picture, I can look at a notebook or textbook and not have to move my entire head and eyes to look up at the screen. It's right there in front of my eyes and keeps my from getting side tracked. You'd be really surprised how useful that is.

This is underneath my desk, ignore the shitty wiring for now, I have to go tomorrow and buy some those velcro wire organizers from the dollar store. I mounted my UPS back up to the leg of the desk so it wasn't just laying on the floor, I used two simple wood screws and my drill, I also mounted the other regular power strip up on the lip of the desk on the back so that it wouldn't lay on the floor either. My goal is to have everything nice and neatly coiled up so that when I vacuum/mop the floor in here, I don't have to deal with the wires. The only other thing I have underneath the desk is a small foot stool so that I can lounge back in my chair.

I also stuck my two external drives right under the floating monitor stand in reach to flip the switch whenever I needed to. All in all I think I did pretty good, and another plus that I found out was that the Ikea shelves I used also have a surface that you can use for dry erase, so now I have a place to write a "things to do" list whenever I think about something so I don't forget later on. The only issue I had was that the DIY dry erase stuff doesn't erase the best, so you just have to use some windex and a paper towel, but it wipes off perfectly and you don't have any smudging or ghosting with it, and I still have 3 more 2x4 sheets left to do whatever I please with!

I also picked up a 7 port dc powered USB hub from newegg on black friday for $10 that way I could charge and plug in my two external hard drives, kindle, phone etc. right on my desk without having to reach behind and deal with the back or side of the computer all the time, as well as charge things when the computer was off.

The calender I made using some extra thin yellow electrical tape to make the squares, then I labeled it all. After that was completed, I set up my new flexible monitor stands. Now I needed storage and a way to organize my stuff. I didn't want to have boxes or any kind of utensil holders on the desk, I wanted everything to be able to be put away, and I didn't want anything to go under the desk since I like to use the entire space, I wanted to be able to roll my chair anywhere I needed, (when I study I like to spread all my material out) also when I do projects like this and fixing electronics or anything I need to, I could have all the room I could wanted. So, I had some Ikea "Vika Annefors" shelving stands that they use for the custom desk system you buy there, I had gotten them on sale for $8 each last year and so I put on longways on the side of the desk and took out the center shelf and my computer tower (massive full size case) fit in there perfectly! I stacked the other one on top of it going perpendicular so that part of it rests on the desk (luckily they were the same height as the desk) and I put the extra shelf from the first unit in the second one so I had more storage for all of my pens, pencils, hard drives, notebooks etc!

So, I went on craigslist and searched "glass" in the furniture section and found a woman selling a nice piece of glass (really thick and has a good finished edge, albeit with two very small chips, for only $10!!) I went and picked it up and placed it over the part of my desk that I wanted the calendar to go under and cut 3 small 4 inch long blocks that only raise up about half an inch. I used some regular double stick tape on the bottom of the blocks so they would not slide around too much and then just placed the glass over it.

Well unfortunately I found out that actual dry erase board costs a ridiculous amount of money, so after some googling, I discovered that you can just buy some white "panel board" from Home Depot/Lowes and actually use that as dry erase for less than $12 for an entire 4x8 sheet!! I got a full sheet, had them cut it into 4 smaller 2x4 pieces and I took one of those pieces and placed it on my wall, however I wasn't too satisfied with having to stretch across the desk to reach it, and I didn't want to put it anywhere else away from my desk since I need to see it constantly to remember to do things.

I also have wanted one of those huge desk calenders for the longest time, so I went to my local walmart/dollar store/staples, but I couldn't find one that started in November! (because I started this all last month) and I needed a calender for the end of this year and they were only selling them starting NEXTyear :( so I got the idea that I could just get some dry erase board and create a re-usable calender myself!

So anyway, I have had the table for a while, so what my goals were to stay as organized as possible and keep everything very clean looking and modern.

Since I have 3 23' monitors, I was thinking of making a stand myself because I thought it would be fun, but I ended up spending (quite a pretty penny) on 3 Ergotron LX desk mount stands, I was really anxious about buying it because I didn't know if it would be worth it but now that I have had them for only 6 hours now, they are totally worth it, built amazing, look great and will last forever....

Hi there /diy/nosaurs, I hope December is coming along nicely for everyone, recently I decided to change up my desk set up so I could maximize all the space I had (I am using a 3x6 solid wood table that I bought from a store that sells used furniture) it's really nice, only cost $100 which would seem not that great of a deal at first, but it's really nice wood and is super sturdy.
