Well anons winter has had its ass kicked and is on the way back to the Southern Hemisphere where it can just as well stay.

This means planting season is upon us. What are you guys planting to really set your operation apart?

I run a small nursery in zone 3 and even though the summers are short I'm constantly amazed what can be grown. Also just picked up a new greenhouse so I'll have an extra 200 sq foot for hot house crops.

Planning on selling some at farmer's markets. Always looking for new stuff to get the passerby's attention.

Pic related. Blue tomatoes! Over a buck per seed but lets hope its worth it.

Its a novel idea OP. What I mean by that is for today's times it is. Historically most of human history had a lot of barter.

Its definitely picking up especially with the economy. I pay my rent with barter. live for free. Sounds good right? Well sure other than the fact I got stuck living here and it turns out my land lady is bat shit crazy. I have gotten so ill from living around her and my crazy neighbors that I really wouldn't even be able to take on a full time job at this point. So I am stuck here.

Some times I have such serious health issues from the stress I realize I might only live another year or two at best if I can't get one of my projects to take off so I can afford to move.

What I have seen why bartering doesn't work is most people are basically dishonest at heart. For instance when I moved in here me and my land lady made an agrement about the living situation. Which changed after the first week. I am able to do only minimal work on the property because she is basically insane. But I stay here because she is at the age she can't live alone and can't afford to hire the help she needs.

I have done a lot of other barters and had a few work out. But most of the ads I have run for trying some sort of barter I could immediately see they were just looking for someone to scam. To get something for nothing.

Its hard enough getting paid for work you have actually done let alone expecting someone to honor a handshake.

Having been self employed for close to ten years now I can in all honesty say more than half the people that call me are out to screw me from the get go.

And I know it isn't just me as other tradespeople tell me stories of getting burned all the freaken time.

Its just some thread I found on random one day when we were trying to create a meme.

I held onto it because I work as a handyman and it seems ninety percent of the people doing handyman work are just about like this guy.

Most of the road side campgrounds actually used just that method for their wells driven by hand pumps.

I'd rather just pay the extra money and get something I could plug in and drink beer.

Its totally regional. My basement floods constantly and I think it is because my neighbors installed a really shitty well years ago. But getting the city here to do anything.

Yeah good luck.

Well I understand you need some sort of chamber for the water to flow in of course.

I have watched loads of videos but they seem to leave out the important part of getting the water to flow.

Well DIY I Googled, Ebayed and then I Googled some more.

How DOES one drill their own well? Can you build or buy a small system for under a thousand bucks?

Looking at areas between twenty to 300 foot water tables.

That's another reason I don't go. I wouldn't go there unless you could afford to leave in a hurry.

OP I think what you are looking for at least for light is called a solar collector. They are little bulb type thingies you stick on your roof and they funnel the light through fiber optic fibers to your inside garden.

They do whoever require cutting holes in your roof and making the cut water tight so you may want to consult with a professional.

If you had the budget OP you could use a series of small water wheels to power pumps which would pump water up hill into a cistern. Then when you really needed some heavy duty power you open the cistern up and it powers your heavy duty water wheel.

As always though you might run afoul of local laws especially the fisheries department.

An alternative is something the Amish use to store compressed air to power their tools. Not sure on the schematics myself.

OP I live in Alaska where that photo was taken. I can tell you without a doubt to forget about coming up here for pipeline work.

Sarah Douchebag Palin pretty much ruined our oil industry. The pipeline may actually have to shut down in several months time which will be a shit storm of historic proportions. Until we get elected leadership here which isn't clinically retarded I would say forget about moving up here.

North Dakota is where its at right now. If I wasn't tied down here that is where I would go. My advice would be that if you want to do this when young don't own anything that can't be stuffed into a compact car so you can move to where the jobs are.

Sounds like you are digging a well.

If you aren't trollen you need to add several thousand dollars to your budget as well as copious amounts of concrete, rebar and heavy duty asphalt sealant.

If you use cedar make sure they aren't the fireproof treated variety. Pretty hard to beat natural cedar though.

Also depending upon the roof you could just pour a skim coat of cement or a quickrete formula.
