Gonna let this thread die since I had to get parts from China to finish off the desk (month-long shipping).

I'll post the final results in a completed projects thread whenever it's done. Seeya, faggots.

Bump

Gonna do the internal wiring soon, switches and headphone jacks. Was violently ill from some bad potato salad the other day.

Shitty by standards of hardwood, yes.
Shitty by standard of decorative cardboard furniture, not really.

You make it sound like it'll collapse. Pallets are designed to carry weight, you know. He asked if it's usable. It technically is.

But I will add that the wood is often warped and cupped, so laminating two layers may be difficult. And as before, buying wood, even soft wood, would yield a better product with much less work.

Can we talk about desks, now?

Many people here will tell you pallet wood is complete shit all-around. Most people here are also either utilitarian or like finely-crafted things, so they can't justify putting the amount of work required to bring pallet wood up to their standard for the rustic and "unsophisticated" look.

However, the wood itself isn't that terrible in many cases. It really depends on the pallet (and your location). Pallets are often treated with harsh chemicals upon entry into a country, especially if you're not in Europe (who have stricter eco laws and use less-harsh treatments). You should look up what the markings of pallets mean to see how they were treated (no guarantee that they weren't treated again later with something else). The harsh chemicals can be hazardous to health, it's why we don't use treated wood for decking indoors, either.

A desk with a top made of pallet wood sounds nice. It may be difficult to coat, though, and you may find the rough surface annoying if you don't aggressively sand it (at which point there's little to distinguish it from fresh wood).

If you really want to, and you find a decent pallet, go for it. My personal suggestion would be to buy wide pine planks at the hardware store (hardwood if you can afford, but you don't need to), "pickle" them, maybe slightly stain, and put a nice oil or poly finish on top.

Pickling is vinegar with steel wool melted in it, and it distresses the wood to look old. You'd get a nice smooth desk with character, without the potential risk.

TL;DR: Sure, but there are better options for your time and effort.

Glued with polyurathane adhesive and clamped for the night.

Second section has to be glued on location, obviously.

Considering Macs require RAM with temperature sensors, it might actaully be more accurate.

But Macs are laughable meme-tier computers and should be treated as such, anyway.

Got any plans for these?

You can get a laptop mat with fans in it from most computer stores.

IKEA also has these angled laptop rests made of plastic for dirt cheap. Or you can check their As-Is for a small finished piece of solid hardwood (I found a nice one that I use as a work surface occasionally). You could even put little rubber feet like for cabinet doors on the bottom so it doesn't slide around, and for more clearance.

I inherited this and two more such stacks from my father, who got plywood cheap from an employer.

Don't know what I'll do with all of it, but for now I'm building my desk. Planning to extend a roof over my door and maybe build a shed, so there's that.

And that's what I have so far, testing how it all fits.

I'm aware my basement is stupendously dirty.

At this point I started questioning what finish I'd give to the middle portion. The wood didn't look bad.

Hi /diy/nosaurs,

I've wanted to build an L desk for a while, but I like cable management and having a keyboard tray, among other things, so just buying a cheap one wouldn't do.

Having received some drawers from my uncle's kitchen reno (brand new, didn't work with the final layout), I decided to make that dream a reality.

Buckle up and follow me on my journey, faggots.

Also, feel free to post your desk builds here.

(tripping only for thread)
