It's all good. I shouldn't have posted that quote, probably.

Sir, I wasn't even implying that all. I was just saying that every job has the potential to be outsourced in the white collar field. Plus, I just really like Snow Crash and wanted to use that quote since it has some truth to it.

And there's some truth to what Neal Stephenson.

I'm not saying free markets are evil. I don't think MURRIKA should be superior and the global supreme master of everything. In fact, I'd say that global trading and that sort of thing are perfectly fine.

I didn't mean to say that the free market was evil at all. I apologize for the misunderstanding. I really did just mean that any job can be outsourced.

What's a job I can do without dealing with people on a frequent basis? The minimal sort of thing. It can be back-breaking labor (preferably not "back-breaking" but something with lots of hard work and effort is nice).

I just got a job. Maintenance tech at an apartment complex. I was doing simple stuff at first: picking up the grounds, painting. Actually, that was about it.

But they lied to me about when I could get an apartment and were having me set to move in immediately. I started to get things together. Then they told me I had a probationary period of 90 days. And seemed to demote me to picking up all of the grounds by myself which would take two hours. And only delivering letters. And doing small things. And said I wasn't working fast enough. And that I shouldn't talk to my manager. Or ask her questions. Or be in the office at all.

And then they told me to clean out the shed which I had no knowledge of. For some reason, all of this made me extremely angry, especially the lying about my potential apartment. So I quit, despite liking the work that I was doing previously. I loved the hard work and painting and moving around.

What can I do that allows me to be alone for the most part like when I was by myself, painting the apartments?

You are sorely wrong. I have a friend who works for [Insert Big Cell Phone Provider Here] as a programmer. They outsource all that programming to shitty, close-minded, inside-the-box programmers in fucking India for a nickel.

Of course, things will eventually be like Snow Crash where:

"When it gets down to it — talking trade balances here — once we've brain-drained all our technology into other countries, once things have evened out, they're making cars in Bolivia and microwave ovens in Tadzhikistan and selling them here — once our edge in natural resources has been made irrelevant by giant Hong Kong ships and dirigibles that can ship North Dakota all the way to New Zealand for a nickel — once the Invisible Hand has taken away all those historical inequities and smeared them out into a broad global layer of what a Pakistani brickmaker would consider to be prosperity — y'know what? There's only four things we do better than anyone else:
music
movies
microcode (software)
high-speed pizza delivery"

I'm only 18 and I can't stand to drink beer. But I think I'll love my weekends. I think I'm gonna' move in quick as I can and get a roommate. It'll be 550 for me to get a two-bedroom apartment.

I guess that's a good point. I guess what I mean: I want to do this job and see if it'll lead me to the path of what I want to do as a career. What I know and what I can do with it.

I think this is the right step forward.

I appreciate your help, though, guys.

Anything else I should know?

Thanks, man. I'll be sure to do that. I am looking forward to this sort of work and what it can grow into. The careers that it can lead to. I want to go to a college or trade school. I'm hoping this'll be my ticket to unlocking the, well, lock that's preventing my mind from finding out what it is that I truly want in life.

I appreciate it, sir.

This is amazing. I'm not very musically talented (I personally only played the Clarinet, Baritone Sax, Tenor Sax and then the Bass Clarinet in middle school and then Bari Sax again in high school) but I do appreciate what you're doing. I don't remember shit from band, but this is goddamn cool. Looks fine as Hell in terms of style and design.

I applaud your efforts, sir. I hope it all goes well. I'll be watching. Keep posting!

Thanks, guys. I really appreciate the advice.

I got into this job by looking at Craigslist. I found the apartment complex and I thought "you know, maybe I can do this."

I'm a big guy. Fat, but getting in better shape. I started doing some work. I'm building a fairly large and somewhat complex desk with my girlfriend's dad.

I like working hard. It seems tiring at first. It's hot and you're sweating but in the middle of it, you realize you're doing something that will actually have an effect. I think in the end, the job will be for me. I really have to invest in some good shoes and gloves. Before I do that, though, I want to make sure the job is for me and that I have an idea of what I'm getting into. Well, I'm going to do it anyway, I just want to do the job first before I buy anything.

This is an entry level position, but I want to know if it's good pay (considering my complete lack of experience as well as working conditions, etc.)

I get paid $10 an hour. I work 40 hours a week. I get a 20% discount on an apartment.

How is that?

So, uh... does anyone else have an idea for what I should know since I start tomorrow?

Hey, /diy/. I just got a job and I need your help because I start on Monday.

I'm going to be a maintenance technician at an apartment complex. It's entry-level. Right now i'll just be repainting the apartments, picking up the trash and dog feces around the complex. Then I'll graduate to the harder stuff.

I don't get paid a plethora of money, but it's decent.

10 an hour, 40 hours a week, 20% off an apartment, on call for a week at a time every three or four weeks.

What should I be aware of when entering this field? Does anyone here do this or something similar? Thanks.

Hi, /diy/. What do you think of this desk that I've been building? I posted a thread about a week ago, but here's the thing as it nears completion. Lots to go, but the frame is together as you can see.

It's pretty light, considering how much material there is.

Not as cool or creative as even the shelf that was built for my in-progress desk.

I have a question. I am on the not very fun adventure of trying to find employment. I can always resort to McDonald's and I've been in college, it's just that I've done terribly because I can't find anything that I'm remotely good at.

I sucked at comp sci, I sucked at doing EMT-Basic training. I sucked at all of it. I failed all my classes because I just couldn't find any happiness or interest in them. It wasn't the career choice that I wanted and I blew at it.

I'm trying my hand gardening and I do mediocre at that. I'm starting out building a desk with my girlfriend's dad, and I'm doing alright at that and I enjoy it.

I want to do something meaningful or something that I enjoy. I could go back to college or a vocational school, it's just that I'm not sure what interests me. How do I find out what interests me and quickly because I need to get a job or start on a career path. Everyone seems to want me to do that and I'm under pressure. I feel like I need to get my career started and everything in order now that I'm legally an adult.

What do I do?

Now, the top of the desk is going to be able to be taken off. There will be poles stick out and they also will be able to be removable because of how they rest on the desk. The rest of what we have done is the frame of the upper portion of the desk, made out of very solid wood. I'm not sure what type exactly but it's pretty much what a standard 2 x 4 is made of. Very sturdy. We cut it down and it was long enough to produce both the length and width of the desk. We then cut that in half and shaved off the extra pieces. We tried getting a router to work on some test wood so that we could put grooves in the corners where the desktop itself could lay in, but that failed miserably. And we ruined some wood, so we made a new piece.

Then I sanded down the wood. We put some glue in and tried a dowel but that didn't go so well, so we got two in screws, then made supports on the corners and nailed them in.

Here's the completed frame for just the top before we put anything else on.

Hey, guys. So, this is my first time on DIY posting. This is the first time that I've made anything, either aside from helping make some shadowboxes.

I'm making a desk. Mostly with scrap wood, but it's good stuff.

I'm making it with my girlfriend's dad, he's teaching me how to do this sort of thing since I never learned when I was atalented /diy/erand now that I'm an adult, I feel that I should have some of these skills.

Anyway, I digress: the desk is shaping up nicely. This first picture I've taken is of the top part of the desk, which will sit about a foot above the main part of the desk. It's 30 inches, I believe. It's made of pre-stained hardwood flooring and some additional wood. I didn't have a lot of work with this one, other than staining.

Continued on in the next post.
