LED strips are great for ambient lighting, they're cheap, widely available, and easy to setup. From my experience with many different brands I can tell you now that the adhesive they come with preinstalled on the back is complete garbage. Expect to use something stronger or even mounting brackets. You should be planning to mount them out of direct view, otherwise it just looks trashy like a rundown strip club.

WS2812s are individually addressable LEDs which you can make a lot of different colors and patterns. If you want to just do one solid color get 5050's and a cheap controller. They're dirt cheap on Amazon or ebay.

To make ambient or accent lighting look good, especially LEDs, they should be hidden from direct sight.

If you want something that can be directly seen without looking cheap check out side emitting fiber optic.

Each strip is rated at 5A and you have 2 running at 10A so you have enough power.

However, running it in that long of a chain without splicing in power you will notice a significant voltage drop at the end of the strip and notice the lights at the end dimming. You should splice in power somewhere other than the beginning.

So they tell you it's best practice to do that just in case of over voltages. This rarely happens if you have a decent regulated power supply.

Also, I don't like that they suggest such a large cap because it takes such a longer time to react to voltage fluctuations. The 220 uF caps should be fine. The 1uF probably wouldn't be able to do much damping in the event of over voltage.

WS2812b are addressable and at ~$40/5 meter strip they're pretty affordable. You'll need at least a 10 amp power supply per 5M strip, and if you want to control it you'll need an Arduino ($5 knockoff) and at least an IR remote.

Check out stepper drivers. If you need to up the voltage as well look at darlington drivers.

You can't run a high amp signal through most, if not all, microcontrollers. The max output on a digital pin on the arduino is like 500mA, which won't come close to lighting a 5m strip or being able to power a motor.

You can get do 5V or 12V led, but if you do 12V you will have to use a mosfet to interface with the lights.

I don't know about WS2801, but with WS2812B you can add power where ever and it doesn't matter. If yours are the same I would suggest adding power in between strips. Also, you may have to boost your signal after so many strips. I have never daisy chained more than one 5m strip so I don't know what the limit is. Good luck OP!

Alright, since you're going to be a nigger and shoot down every single fucking idea here is what you do.

Get a microcontroller, some WS2812 RGB addressable LEDs, and a battery source. Now you can adjust the brightness of the LEDs using a remote control, timer, cellular signal, hell even GPS. This way you can locate your dog anywhere after your boyfriend Mohammad gets done smashing your wife.

Light autist here. EL won't be enough for you to light up to see what you're doing. It's excellent mood lighting, but no much more. There's side emitting fiber optic, but it's a little brighter than EL. Your only real option is LEDs which you can make as bright or as dim as you like, so you can use it for mood lighting.

The strips are probably individually addressable LEDs. That being the case depending upon the controler (microcontroller) you can make an infinite number of patterns. I really doubt your remotes are going to be compatible. You could always do it yourself like I did.
