>>968942

>>968945
That's a Voice of Music ceramic crystal microphone from the early 1960s. It was sold with radio equipment and home tape recorders under various brands, including CBS, Sonotone, and Voice of Music. Some models have a removeable screw in the side (mine doesn't) which changes the mic from an omnidirectional wide frequency-response mic to a fairly unidirectional (cardioid) narrow-response mic. They have very different characteristics which makes each configuration more appropriate kinds of work. Mine (and all the Voice of Music-branded ones I've seen from this model) doesn't have a screw. If yours does it might be more rare! As far as operating it does, it depends what kind of plug you have on the end. Because it's a piezo crystal mic it's very high impedance (probably around 50kΩ but possibly higher) so you need a decent high impedance preamp to get the best response and signal out of the mic. Most "guitar" or "instrument" inputs will work, but only high quality ones will really sound best. A guitar amp will work fine - in fact most people who want these kinds of mics nowadays are harmonica players who really seekout the ergonomics and durability of these old mics, combined with their high impedance output which goes beautifully straight into an amp and the crunchy, lonlinear sound of the crystal elements. They can take the abuse, and they scream the blues just the right way.

Oddly enough today I was given a Sony F-3B microphone, it's in pretty nice shape and has a 10 foot cord. The mono jack looks kinda funky though.

you could plug it directly into the "mic input" but it won't sound great. you can try it into the "line in" which might work, because it has a more suitable input impedance. unfortunately a "line in" on a standard sound card/computer input won't have enough gain. if you really want to use it you might have to invest in a preamp with a good input impedance and gain... something like pic realted will work ok, you can go directly to the line in from this. or if you just buy an usb audio interface that should be ok too

There's nothing wrong with it other than being kludgy. Someone can be electrocuted if they touch that screw, but there's a big exposed terminal a few inches below it anyway.

The fat wire is meant to carry much more current than the thin one, but that doesn't mean the thin one is carrying way too much current because they're connected together. Current draw from parallel loads doesn't work like that.

You can see him using it constantly in Live at Pompeii. Mine needs to be recapped and have a few other tidbits done before it's really up and running. A few years ago it was ok but the caps were drying out and it was getting quite dull. Now it's got a bunch of dead caps, so I don't even play it anymore, until I can get it fix't
