so i've recently come into possession of a 2000 chevy metro LSI 4 cylinder. its a cute little car, body is in perfect shape, real clean, used consistently and lightly with good maintenance, buying from the first owner. its my first car.

so naturally i want to do some fun stuff with it.

i'm going to paint it hot flat satin gloss pink, with black stripes, and the number 138 in either arial italic or rosewood font interrupting the stripe on the driver side door. the side stripes will fade by a slash-thin-out . the side stripes hit the wheel well and follow thinly along the well and then the head lights, tracing up to the chevy medallion, then going up the hood, the roof, down the back, down the trunk and out.

i'm assuming that i'm going to need to sand the body down to metal, remove/tape and plastic off the parts that aren't getting painted, prime it, tape off the stripes/decal exactly, paint the body pink, let it dry, then tape off everything but the decals and paint the decals black, and then finish with layers of clear gloss coat, and buff it. i can follow a car painting guide.

i guess my question is, are there any services that will help me print out sticker tape to more easily tape the decals? am i understanding the decalling process right? its pretty much just a process of measuring and mirroring accurately with tape, isn't it? but getting those curves right will be hard... help me diy?

pics related, crude representations of what i'm aiming to do. black stripes on hot pink.

then comes the 21 inch sub ;)

its not bait, i'll post pics of it in two weeks, i gave him 1000 up front and will give him 250 more next paycheck to bring it home. and its actually a cool little buggy. 13 inch go-kart wheels XD.

but its got FANTASTIC pedals, seriously. the brake is light and springy, so you can brake seamlessly so easy, with a slow squeeze, and the accelerator is similar, except it has a more straight response than the brake, which has a log response (the same distance of press at the end of its extent is three times as impactful as the same distance of press at the start of its range). and it stops fast.

the engine is tiny, but purrs, and everything is so easy to get to, probably the easiest car to work on i've ever seen... two guys could probably pull the motor by hand. its not all computerized, a 30 dollar hand held reader can do all the computer diagnostics you need. its not powerful by any stretch of the imagination but can get 44mpg with tuning for efficiency. which i intend to do, get the engine harmonized, do some basic balancing, flatten out the compression on the cylinders, start with the injectors and work down to the exhaust to get a perfect back pressure response on the valves... i'm gonna baby this car and see if i can't get it to 600,000 miles. maybe even a million. that'd be cool.

and yes, gunna rice the everloving fuck out of it. its gonna get some mad fucking bass, maybe in the future do some black-and-pink re-upholstering in leather. maybe someday learn to install nitrous, and race at stoplights XDDDD. don't know how to do that yet though.

you get the picture, i'm just gonna have some fun loving and caring for this car.

what a dick.

if anyone has suggestions for how to accurately tape those curves, let me know. i'm thinking of making something like a score-guide for wood, and dragging it along the wheel well and head light to cut mask tape accurately to get clean curves.

the quality and pleasingness of the of the job will pretty much rely on how well done those curves are. and those pics aren't very representative, the straight lines on sides and front/top/back will be like 6 inchs wide, but the curved following lines will be like 1.5

>>871271

he's not me. i am.

and i've determined the correct technique for applying curved stripes, after consulting with the house of kolors, a pro paint provider.

its as i suspected, you pretty much take a marker and a guide and mark out your curves and stripes, then paint the black all around the stripes area. after it dries, you carefully measure and tape the stripes off and paint pink over everything. then pull the tape once its sat for 15 minutes or so to prevent runs. (after prime coat). then you'd sand and caramel wheel, and then you'd apply clear coat. this will ensure that the "shimrin pearl" basecoat will have the same quality on both the black and the pink, and the clearcoat will be buffed to a gloss with a angle grinder buffing wheel.

Make sure you prime and sand with about 320 after sanding it back.

would you recommend a self-etching primer, or a polyester contour primer?

what do you think of water-based paints in between the prime and the clear?

i'm thinking 'porn star pink' stripes on black.

what would you recommend for maximum gloss? i want that black to be like... a mirror made of space, to contrast the sparkling metallic hot pink stripe.

I personally wouldn't use that gun, but i did it for my job and my gun is ~600 dollars.

If you sand back to bare metal (which you shouldn't, other than in small patches) use a dust coat of etch.

Prime it with something like the cheapest dupont series, it's cheap and hard to fuck up. Then use a high gloss paint for your colour and don't worry about clear because it's not going to look super pretty anyway, especially if you're mentally set on using black.

I really would not recommend painting black as a beginner it is by far the bardest colour to make look perfect.

You can't go wrong with DeVilbiss guns. You should be able to pick up a good one for <$200. HoC is a paint brand. Didn't know they sold guns.

You seem intent on base/clear coat. I'm going to suggest that you use a catalyzed, single stage paint from a quality mass producer like PPG instead, to simplify and lower cost of the project. Single stage paints look great after color sand and buff.

In terms of paint prep... if you've painted things before you should know prep is 90% of the work. Rather than sand to metal, I'd sand down existing paint to smooth, starting with 320 and work to 600. This allows you to avoid primer, or at least an etching primer. Make spot repairs on scratches and dents with fill primer as needed. If the car is really scratched up, at some point you may end up primering it all anyway.

Obv you'll need to paint door jambs, underside of all closure surfaces first, then close it up and paint, since color will not match original.

I would paint the car body first, then mask car and paint stripes. They make a striping tape that's 1/4" wide intent for this work. Use regular masking tape + paper to shield rest.

and yeah, my plan was to remove the doors and stuff and paint the obverse first before going to the car.

i shouldn't have a problem using a dry erase marker to rough outline where my stripes are gonna go, and then coating that area with the strip color, right? then taping the stripes off inside the colored swath and blacking the rest of the car.

2: You will get laughed at and posted on /o/ for driving a metro that's riced out

3: If you repaint this car pink, your chances of dumping it once you get a better car will be nonexistent.

4: Don't ever number a car unless it's a period correct restoration detail or you're tracking it

5: For the love of god don't put a 21 inch sub in that shitbox, you clearly don't know a thing about cars so putting a sub inside that thing will cost you a lot of money and time.

OP, keep it stock and drive it until you don't need it anymore. This car isn't worth modifying to your tastes, and even if it was a nice car I have to say your taste in vehicle aesthetics is shit.

after research, the clear answer is that masking and painting will make the best look.

i will remove the plastic side strips and the ornament and logo. sand the paint off the car with a sanding disk for my angle grinder. down to bare metal. fill the things i removed so they're flat. block sand to even.

then i will remove the doors and anything else the needs to go, and tape and seal the car off.

then i will apply 3-4 coats of contour polyester primer, sanding in between each coat, to get the flattest, nicest paneling.

then i will spray a coat of white, when it dries sand with 1200, and spray with another coat of white. then another.

then i will spray with a transparent midcoat, and immediately spray with a bit of silver flake.

then i will mask off the parts of the car that will be red, and spray the red. not a lot. i want the pearl flake sparkle to come through a little.

then i will mask off the parts of the car that will be blue, and spray the blue. not a lot. i want the pearl flake sparkle to come through a little.

then i will spray 3-4 coats of premium show clear.

the internet is truly dead when people give retarded potato 'hurr don't be dumb and do interesting things' advice rather then enthusiastically encouraging something even if they think its a bad idea. especially if its a bad idea.

it is now flooded with people that 10 years ago didn't know how to use a cell phone or people born less then 12 years ago and whose idea of social interaction is playing call of duty all day after learning about diversity and tolerance in school for eight hours.

and now when they see someone doing something fun, if its not what they think that people think is a good idea, they try to tear it down.

the internet is truly dead.

five years ago we would have had people offering really good designs to spraypaint giant dicks on the car or something.

its not like anyone believes that you're actually 'concerned' about me regretting painting my car like the american flag, no, obviously. no one is. that'd be ridiculous. whats not ridiculous is that you browse DIY fancying yourself some sort of creative, talented individual, based solely on your experience telling people that their ideas suck and should not be done, because the truth you hide from yourself, but not others, is that you're jealous. you're jealous of someone who can be totally comfortable in an american flag painted metro with enormous bass. i can understand why. life hasn't given you the experience to know that you really oughtta just do what you want, enjoy yourself, and just smile when people hate on it. you haven't learned that yet. so you see someone with a car painted like a giant dick, and you get angry, and you start judging them, you let them know that you, "and by extension everyone else through implication" think its gay, and that they should feel bad, and regret is inevitable.

you don't understand what its like to live without bad feelings. i could do anything and still feel cool. and that makes you hate me.

When I was 16 I spent my whole savings on an Escort. I lowered it, put rims/tires, ground effects, header, spoiler, catback exhaust, tinted windows, had a custom roll bar made, racing seats, 5 point harnesses, god knows how many stereo set ups, and the final touch.. "DRIVE FAST, TAKE CHANCES" on the windsheild.

When I think about all the money I sunk into it, it makes me cringe. I could have had a way nicer car if I had just saved it.

That being said, I owned the car for 7 years and had so many great times in it. I'm sad I sold it. I can see both sides of everyones argument here - yes, you will look like a douche with a metro "all did up with fancy racin' stripes"....but then again, I did everything myself on my car, I learned a lot, and even though I was super douchey most of the time - I wouldnt trade that for having a nicer, newer car.

i might have to do that, actually, using an aluminum-polyester filler on some areas (where i'm removing the retarded plastic strips on the sides of the door which presumably are defense against shopping carts and other peoples doors opening), and then an etch coat followed by spray-on contour polyester. i'll just use a gallon of contour coat i guess, for the base, sand between each layer until the panels are nice and flat. that will make it look better in the end.

>>873751

from what i've learned, you actually want the pearl underneath the color. the color will be translucent and the pearl will shine through. if it was say, red, you'd do a silver/white pearl coat, and then spray red over it until it was a good balance between red saturation and pearlescent shimmer. alternatively you could mix pearl into the red and do one coat.

if you want to use rattle cans, its just a question of if they have the color you want. it'd probably look better with the spray gun. or maybe not.

i CAN paint my shitbox, and i CAN turbocharge and NOS it up.

i can do ANYTHING i put my mind to; of that, i have the deepest, most unshakeable conviction.

i pity the fool who for a single second imagines that he 'can't' do something as simple as installing the correct components into a vehicle correctly. you set some low bars for yourself, anon.

not that i have to justify my reasoning or explain myself, but i've decided against upgrading the internals beyond premium filters/leads/plugs/etc because it will impact the efficiency and because reasonably, i wish to first keep an engine factory-new before i learn to modify it. furthermore, my resources, while vast, are not unlimited XD and i've also got other things i want to do, i'm building a recording PC, and RME audio interfaces cost more than it would to buy, turbo, nos, speaker, paint, and install a machinegun on a used metro.

what you are envious of is the amount of pleasure i can get out of a 'shitty metro' when you probably have a nicer car and get less pleasure out of it. that's the issue here. you're upset that i'm happy.

and yes, i did come asking for advice on masking decals, and any general useful info. i've received enough and done research and i'm set. as for turbo, i never claimed that i could give you a step by step instruction list off the top of my head, but, i have done my research and know the general procedure and requirements and goals of turbocharging, such that i am confident that it is within my ability provided i expend the resources needed and go slowly, with care, looking up information i don't have or researching things that i don't understand.

are you really going to maintain that in this day and age of the internet, that ANYONE is incapable of ANYTHING???

>what you are envious of is the amount of pleasure i can get out of a 'shitty metro' when you probably have a nicer car and get less pleasure out of it. that's the issue here. you're upset that i'm happy.

I drive a beat to shit '93 Chevy Pickup. I get immense pleasure from it because it's my truck. I do all the work, I keep it running, and it's fun to drive. But above all I didn't rice it out and look like a retard.

>and yes, i did come asking for advice on masking decals, and any general useful info. i've received enough and done research and i'm set. as for turbo, i never claimed that i could give you a step by step instruction list off the top of my head, but, i have done my research and know the general procedure and requirements and goals of turbocharging, such that i am confident that it is within my ability provided i expend the resources needed and go slowly, with care, looking up information i don't have or researching things that i don't understand.

are you really going to maintain that in this day and age of the internet, that ANYONE is incapable of ANYTHING???

I hate to break your spirits, but the internet serves as a good place to get your foot in the door for things. You will not install a turbocharger in a vehicle not meant to have on installed correctly on your first try. You will take hours upon hours to do it, blow up your turbo when you test it, and waste your money. It doesn't matter how slow you go or how careful you are, you need guidance in person from someone who has this kind of experience. You can't use wikihow to install turbo.

>and my paintjob is gonna be fucking gleaming that car was handled by faggots.

And what is OP?
>I guess in the off chance that op is not a troll but actually autistic

I'm convinced this is a full blown retard, even a troll can't be this stupid. Most /diy/ trolls usually ask stupid shit like how to make a fleshlight or if X will make mustard gas. This person sounds delusional as fuck.

Sounds like it's just an old belt or the tensioner needs adjustment. Post pics of your current belt.

I did more reading and the gatorback belts are neoprene but the faggots at Goodyear call it "wingprene" which is a major red flag for me. Using faggot names for industrial products to stand out when all it should do is make any mechanic worth his salt laugh his ass off.

I would advise against neoprene belts also due to their longevity. Epdm belts are better. So I will shill for gates now who make OEM belts which means they are as good as or better than the original belt installed in the car when it was brand new.
http://www.gates.com/products/automotive/tools-and-sales-aids/belt-wear-diagnosis/neoprene-vs-epdm-belts

If a belt is misaligned it won't squeal, it will jump teeth, chew out the belt and then squeal. Try cleaning your pulleys(careful alternators die if you get solvents on them) check your tensioner and replace it. I don't buy this misaligned pulley line crap on those forums. I have owned many shit tier old cars and none of them have had alternators vibrate out of alignment.

I can tell you are ready to NOS and turbocharge the engine.
And im sure all the internal engine work will certainly get you to your million mile mark.

Just gotta do the real tough stuff first, like diagnosing a squealing alternator belt.
Im glad you have taken the first step, which is quite difficult... locating the alternator belt itself!

He isnt the first person to feel insecure about his first car
He isnt the first person to get the bright idea of drawing massive attention to himself.

He wont be the last person to fuck up and regret what he did to his car, especially when he decides he wants to sell it and nobody wants it.

The worst part is, there is nothing wrong about OPs car. There is no reason to be insecure about it. Usually when you rice the fuck out of your car is because its an utter piece of garbage thats been wrecked and looks like shit. Thats not OPs car, its actually a decent and respectable looking car.

i've looked at plasti dip paint. i kinda wonder if its a cheap gimmick well advertised? its easy, since you don't have to mask so much, but i'm undsure of the quality of it... and i want the red/blue to really sparkle from the white+flake.

still have a lot of research to do on the paint, and will definitely visit a local jobber before deciding.

I think you should buy a frame from a wreckers and do that. then just do an engine swap. but hey, refinishing an entire chassis before touching the engine that is leaking oil is dumb as fuck anyway.

you dont sand something that big. you use MEK to strip it. then sand any rust patches. i guess if you must do it right then take a look at how much cold galv paint costs. should only be like 200$ to coat the entire thing in it for your base layer.

>> No.875181

>>875180

ok! thanks for the advice, will look up MEK.

there's this stuff called etch primer that has acid in it that bites onto metal and is meant for base coating on metal.

there ain't no oil leaks though. am gonna do a compression test however, and replace the oil and air filters, and all the leads. after degreasing and cleaning the engine bay.
