Well /diy/, I am looking for a hobby. My current hobby is binge playing video games when I don't have to work. What a shit hobby. I hate it, it makes me feel like shit, I do it and then have nothing to show for it but some fucking pixels on a god damn screen. I am a wreck.

Anyway, I am looking for a crafting hobby. unfortunately... I live in a fucking apartment which limits what I can do in terms of crafting.

I am kind of interested in like glass blowing or metal working but you can't do that shit in a apartment. I don't like hobbies like drawing or painting. Are there any craftsmen here? What do you craft and what is needed for that particular craft?

Pick up a nice-ish pocket knife and try out whittling. It'll make a mess, but you can do it anywhere and it's easy enough to contain it to, say, a table.

This. Electronics and music. A good solder set will only set you back like $50, parts are usually pennies, breadboards are cheap. A beginner microcontroller like a rpi or arduino is helpful too.
For music just get whatever feels right. I'd say go piano because noise constraints.

Learn a new language. Videogames are a great tool for that if you combine them with some other method (like duolinguo), just set game in the language you want to learn.

I'm a native spanish speaker and I learned english (mostly) by playing text heavy videogames.

A hobby my help but also think longer term. I have /diy/ equipment and experience but I find that a lot of the time these days I can't be stuffed because what I miss most is interaction with others and no gf and all that. For far to many years /diy/ was my distraction to the bigger problem.

Dont be such a recluse, go outside, Find a local hackerspace/makerspace and get inspired, and build stuff without having to have the space/own tools. If there are no such things where you live, find community colleges/courses for random things and follow them. Often, when you take apart of a course (pottery/welding/car repair/whatever) and get enthusiastic, you hear about many possibilities do /diy/ on your own. Often places will let you rent space or use their gear after you took a course and people that come to these things know of other locations to do cool things.

I rolled into cool things just by taking a welding course at a local lower technical school.
hell, you might even find an old timer on craigslijst that is willing to teach you stuff in exchange for some cash/cases of beer/company

>> No.834126

carpentry and making shit is pretty cool but think about this

Roughly %70 of the earth is covered in water, there is so much cool shit you can do in and on the water and it's very rewarding/relaxing
Learn to surf, kayaking, stand up paddle boarding, whatever, fishing, scuba diving, spear fishing, hell even trawling a beach for stuff with a metal detector is fun.

I don't usually respond to these threads, because it's always the same "I'm bored, tell me what to do" sort of stuff. You can't go through life waiting for somebody else to do all your thinking for you.

However, to add to the list of relatively quiet, apartment-friendly ideas, what about fiberglassing? Epoxy resin doesn't stink, and polyester resin could still be used on the balcony, if you have one. Some people make gaming miniatures; jewelry; cosplay crap; car parts; speaker boxes; radio-controlled cars, boats, airplanes; furniture... shit, make a yacht if you have the room to do it. People make almost anything you can imagine out of fiberglass. It's easy to find, and there's a wealth of information about it on the internet.

This is one thing missing to many these days with families being what they have become and the advent of the "gtfo and google it generation".

At least I had two parents but they were too old and my grand parents were dead by the time I started to really diy.

write technical articles for trade magazines. i write two articles a month; one for a trade magazine and one for an association magazine. it's an extra $600-$1000 and takes maybe 4-6 hours out of my month total.

I'm a tradesmen. I belong to my industry's biggest association and subscribe to our trade magazines.

I found out they pay for articles and started writing. Most of what I write about is what I know best about in my trade: NFPA, IBC/IFC, and life safety codes in general. Most of my articles are about me encountering someone else's fuck up and showing how to fix it while citing what codes they violated and the right way to fix it.

Anyways, if you know a trade and the popular publications for it, there is a good chance they'll pay you for articles if it's something that hasn't been covered before or it's something new.

Anyway, papercraft and origami are really fun. All you need for papercraft is a decent printer, paper, knife and glue.

Origami you just need the paper.

You could even get really fancy and print out some life sized shit and epoxy over it and make some pretty cool costume pieces.

If you really want to do metal working then i suggest that you take some classes at a trade school.

Ive taken machining and welding classes. They taught me a lot and i met some cool people.

You could start learning 3d modelling since you games a lot, you'd be interested somewhat in it and kind of already have knowledge of it.

It's nothing like drawing or painting, and it isn't hard to pick up and learn.

Just read the sticky on /3/ and it'll tell you everything you need to know.

Look up online and see if there's a local hackerspace near to you

That's what I did, and it really got me into crafting stuff. They'll have a shitload of tools you can use to make stuff.

I use mine to make cosplay props and then go to conventions, it's really helped fuel it.

OP you dont want this.
you want this.
you are stuck inside doing nothing all day.
you dont even enjoy the video games anymore, they just pass the time between the neetbux payouts.
you probably spend all your money on gadget shit on ebay when it comes, trying to find new toys to play with just to relieve the horrible boredom.
this is actually me.
I will buy things for my car it doesnt even need just to wrench on it. like replacing a belt that's worn but doesnt even squeal yet on my car.

I spent 2000$ on a bike and it gets me out of the house a lot. I quit smoking because I was riding so much and it actually made me feel happy. but then my rear hub died so I've been waiting on a thing for that.

really really avoid diy unless you have a specific project in mind. I think we get a lot of these people who want to come and join in on all the creative energy but they're really more suited to /fa/ where you buy the toy then you just put it on your body and you're done like a pair of shoes or whatever. if you have motivation problems then you will end up like me, surrounded by broken things and half completed projects. the mess it will make and the constant reminder of your failure will bring you down probably.

I agree with you about the people there but the sticky on that board is a great place to get started.

If I was going to start doing 3d again,I would've prefered to have read that sticky rather than figuring out a lot of that stuff on your own.
