Solid-state or tube?

Solid-state amps are easier and cheaper to build, but almost universally considered to have inferior tone.

The major problem with building tube amps are the transformers required. You at the very least need output transformers, and I couldn't tell you off the top of my head if you could still buy such things off the shelf easily. You also need a high-voltage supply for the tubes (100-200 volts DC?). It's possible to do this with a switching power supply, but you'd almost have to design and build that yourself. Using a transformer would actually be easier (and safer).

The P1 is a great starter project for tubes, and delivers amazing tone at a moderate price. Do not look down upon its 5 watts, it's more than enough to rock anyone's cock.

Other relatively cheap, simple builds (ie: good enough for people who barely know how to solder and have basic troubleshooting skills), as well as being well documented, would be Fender's 5F1 and Marshall's 18watt and Plexi. These have been particularly visited.

For playing with a band I would recommend at least 20W RMS output power to the speaker, if you are using the amp live (Not miced/Line Out to PA System). Although if you want to go the 5 watt route you get the advantage of potentially using a pure Class A circuit design, which will yield a particularly "sparkly" tone, and you will be able to crank it to levels of good power saturation without having to blow everyone's ears out, and you would just have to mic your amp to the PA system you were using. Also a 5 watt Class A amplifier is quite easy to build as far as amps go, I personally recommend that route.

NOOOOOO DO NOT SEND POWER OUTPUT TO YOUR PA, YOU WILL BLOW IT UP. The difference is that with the mic route, you get the added tonal benefit of your power tubes, assuming you are using a tube amp, whereas with a Line out, the signal comes out after your tone stack after the preamp at line level, (1/4 inch output) to be direct input to wherever, however the sound quality will not be as good. Many amps sound really gross when you try to run them with a line out, particularly when the signal is in an all analogue circuit, it just sounds harsh and trebly I find half the time. I recommend micing with either a Shure SM57 or a good quality Condenser microphone

Absolutely! Its really an awesome way to run your rig because its lightweight, portable, and doesnt have 15 bloody tubes in it XD I personally use a 100 watt 2X12" combo and its HEAVY. I also have a 5 watt Fender that I use for smaller gigs miced with a condenser mic and I love it. Another option that will give you 70-80% tone is a power soak unit hooked to your speaker output. you can crank the amp and still run at as low as line level with some units. There are many many options you can go with for a live amp setup (This thread = My Friggin specialty XD)

Low frequency mic: meant for kick drums, etc to give it that subwoofer sound.
