Where can I find a simple Box Fan in the UK?
>Pic Related

Britfags here help me out, I'm trying to build my own allergen air filter so I need a square, flat box fan, but I can only find them online from US sellers. Suggestions?

Yes, OP's problem has been discovered since the original thread. For some reason box fans are rare to find in the UK, if not impossible.

Makes me wanna just build a box fan from scratch.

Maybe thats a reason?

Ones from 3M Filtrete are supposed to be very good. Since I cant find any box fans I'm probably going to buy one of Filtrete's own filter setups

Broken ones, or ones that haven't left their packaging since the eighties?

Cumbersome and bulky generic stand fans are relatively common. I say common, but I haven't seen a fan in a long time. It's not often that you need cooling down in Great Britain. The weather almost always takes care of that for you.

Get one online. It's going to be difficult to find one in the UK.

Wouldn't a computer fan work, in theory? I'm not sure how big they're made actually, but I'm pretty sure the big one in my desktop is 200x200mm.

The static pressure from a box fan is crap for pulling air through a filter. I'd build a box with the filter being one side and putting a squirrel cage fan on the other. You'll probably have better luck finding a squirrel cage fan in the UK.

>> No.789178

>>788744
Actually it depends on your budget and space allowance. If you are just going to use one single filter panel, a cheap basic one rated for pre-filtering is actually better than a high efficiency filter because of the amount of air flow.

Since you are using a box fan, you won't get too much air pressure out of it, a good filter will limit air flow and just filter a tiny amount of air, which is pointless.

The round sort of ones with a roundy wire cage, which is impossible to make filter with.

>> No.789182

>>789104
Yes it will work, but it only has a exponentially tiny air flow compared to bigger fans so they are pretty much pointless.

Hey, I've built this before: >>788611 and it works perfectly. I highly recommend it. It does not tax the fan hardly at all and you can feel the cool draft on the intake side of the filters. If you think it will tax your fan, just make an M or W pattern with 4 filters. More surface area will lessen the load on the fan.

Your gonna want something stronger then a box fan go to a home improvement store an find something stronger then go from there on how to make one, I'm sure they have something fans are used for so many things in construction for them not to.

Exactly, as I mentioned before, GET A SQUIRREL CAGE FAN if you want to overcome the static pressure of pulling air through a filter. They have these in the UK. Chances are your house has one moving air through your ducts right now.

This is another style that will move lots of air. Vortex - can be found on amazon. Popular with dope growers because it relatively quiet, can move air through carbon filters and hooks up to ducting without afro-engineering a connector.

The squirrelies can be found at home improvement or industrial supply stores. Noise and power depend on the size of the unit but they are far more efficient that a box fan.

I guess people must have done it, it is just the "box fan filter hack" is usually done by a normal person (aka diy noobs or non-hobbist) who already has a box fan hanging around

Also I am sure I could probably build a nice filter with a squirrel fan and some plywood, but that means I will have to go get the plywoods and bla bla bla and to actually build the whole thing, and that is like after maybe $100 and an afternoon gone.

While normal people can just tape a filter to a box fan. I guess this is why it is way more "popular"

>> No.789667

(cont)

Actually how would you tape a replaceable filter to a squirrel fan? Make a housing around it?
legit question

I guess the issue would be make it quiet enough to use in a room?

looks sexxxay. like a jet engine. and it is built intelligently, I agree.

if you want a GOOD axial fan, then you need to get a fan that is set into a round casing. These are usually called "shrouded" or "ducted" fans. Like pic related.

"real" inustrial-grade fans are always built like this picture (inside a round enclosure). Never in a square box, or in an open wire cage.

>>788598
Sure, but the point of it is that you can build it with fans you already have.

If you're going to go out and buy a fan, there's no point in buying the wrong fan when the right fan costs the same.

The best solution is to buy one of those hybrid-flow fans that indoor orchid growers use to extract the air, and one of those filter cages that indoor orchid growers use to hold the carbon filter that absorbs the distinctive orchid fragrance.

Because auto air filters remove gross particulates, and not the fine particulates you need to be trapping to remove allergens.

UK houses don't have ducts.

They're heated by circulating water, and cooled by opening windows.

There is nowhere in the UK hot enough to require residential AC, and there is nowhere cold enough to have a frost line and therefore a basement, and therefore there is nowhere with space to waste on a ducting system.
