What are your top 5 favorite tools in your entire arsenal?

For me it's:

1. Dremel - cordless

2. X-tronic soldering station w/ hot air and power supply

3. My custom version of "helping hands". Made with heavy duty alligator clips, gooseneck tubing, and hard drive magnets for a strong magnetic base.

4. 4 1/2 angle grinder with a bunch of attachments (cut off, wire wheel, diamond blade, etc.)

5. 12v Milwaukee M12 impact driver

Whats yours?

I don't do any big projects, but I do enjoy scratch building parts for models. So my top five tools would be:

1) X-acto knife, that thing is awesome and can be used for anything

2) Needle files

3) Dremel

4) Micro punch set

5) Miniature needle nose pliers

Single-speed Rotary Tool (Dremel)
Resistance Solderer (DIY)
Crosscut Saw (Ace brand)
Hand Drill (antique)
Bench Sander (HFT)

Those are my most used items that are not screw drivers, hammers, or pliers.

Dremel & cordless, not either for me.

My list:
1. X-Acto type knives + various blades. Have 9 or 10 by now, built up over the years. Very handy not to have to change blade but just reach for a new handle.
2. Needles files, conventional and diamond.
3. Variable speed motor tool with speed control in the brick, not in the handpiece. Was temped to put this first because of all the stuff that I can ONLY do but I use the knives and files more and there's plenty I do with it that can be done by hand, just more slowly.
4. Box of bits of all kits for the motor tool including cutoff wheels, grinding heads, burrs, silicone rubber tips, buffing & polishing wheels.
5. Diamond plates, use them for sharpening my craft knives and my kitchen knives.

+ shoutout to my SAK, which I've used much over the last 30 years.

1. Tosense 3-in-1 Plasma/tig/arc welder (Not great, but gets the job done. Saving up for a Weldanpower)
2, Angle Grinder- I bought 4 on sale at China Freight so each one could be a dedicated device (i.e., one is solely a wire-wheel, one is solely a grinder, etc)
3. "Pony" Vice
4. Ball Peen Hammer
5. Leatherman Wave (For when that screwdriver/pliers is just too far away...)

Gooseneck tubing harvested from cheap usb led lights (ebay)

Magnets from old hard drives

alligator clamps from digikey:

Tech tip: Don't use JB weld on the magnets. It's ferromagnetic due to the iron in it. It wont stay put, It gets sucked to the magnet. Fun to play with a glob of it though.

Say I got a dead Dremel battery

And gutted it and put a step-down transformer to 12V into it

Do you think I would die?

Or would it work off the mains?

>> No.580538

>>580495

That battery is 12 volts DC (if it in fact is 12 volts). Putting 12 volts AC into that motor is probably not a great idea unless its a universal motor. I don't know if it is or it isn't or how to tell without ripping it apart.

You can always rebuild the battery, thats not hard. Either way you'd be better off getting a real corded die grinder and stop messing around with this hobby level stuff.

1. Tesa Dial caliper - 0.01mm graduations. Still only accurate to 0.02 like every other caliper, but easier to read.
2. Blake Co-ax indicator - makes clocking up holes in the mill quick work
3. 10" Crescent
4. Thor #2 copper/hide hammer
5. Etalon 0-25mm Micrometer

No prizes for guessing my occupation.
